JEDI
I joined Respawn Entertainment in 2024 as a Technical Designer on the Jedi team, working on an as-yet unannounced project. There I worked in Unreal Engine 5, scripting primarily with Blueprints. I developed debug and designer tools for other designers to efficiently create content, as well as rebuilt an existing system to work more effectively with UE5.
I also worked on scripting bespoke narrative interactions, and shortly after joining I changed roles to a Narrative Technical Designer to reflect my increased focus on narrative work. I was assigned to a level where I worked in close collaboration with the level designer, narrative designer, and writer to come up with the desired player experience flow in the level and the beats needed to create it. I drove the design of and implemented our bespoke narrative interactions throughout the level, from in-engine prototypes to coordinating with other departments to get those moments what they needed. I also advocated for our vision to other stakeholders to ensure a cohesive narrative experience throughout the level.
In addition, I worked on a new type of cinematic gameplay sequence for some of the game’s more bombastic moments, with a focus on seamless transitions back-and-forth between gameplay and cinematics. I helped develop a new design ethos for the desired player experience in these types of sequences. In conjunction with animation, I also helped develop a new animation pipeline for putting together these sequences, as well as built new designer tools to streamline implementation.
